What Gets Measured Gets Done

The Importance of Measuring UX

User experience (UX) is an essential factor in today's digital world. It refers to the overall experience that a user has when interacting with a product or service, such as a website, app, or software. Measuring UX is crucial for businesses to understand how their users are behaving and how they are interacting with their products as well as for Uxers to be able to explain and quantify their work and impact. In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of measuring UX and how it can help businesses improve their products and UXers to be more successful in their job.

"What gets measured gets done" - Peter Drucker

The original quote goes like this “What gets measured gets managed” but the point is the same if we want to succeed in a UX world as designers or researchers it is critical to learn how to measure intangible concepts such as the world of user experience.

Even though people realize the importance and value that good user experience can create, especially when it's expressed in revenue, they often find it very difficult to measure it and with that manage it. Of course, there are a lot of companies with large UX teams that have dedicated UX researchers focusing on both quantitative and qualitative methods of measuring UX, these people are not targeted with this blog post, I'm writing this for people that are still on the way to becoming a member in such teams or just want to learn and develop their skills beyond creating polished user interfaces.

Understanding Your Users

Measuring UX provides businesses with valuable insights into their users' behavior and needs. It helps businesses understand what users are looking for, what they like, and what they don't like. By understanding these factors, businesses can make informed decisions about how to improve their products and services to meet their users' needs. This, in turn, leads to increased user satisfaction, retention, and of course revenue.

Sometimes the products we work on have a very niche group of users with specific demographics or socio-economic status, other times we work with products that are meant to be used by everyone and you should be able to maneuver in both cases.

Identifying Areas for Improvement

Measuring UX also helps identify areas for improvement in products and services. By analyzing user behavior and feedback, businesses can identify pain points, areas of confusion, and other issues that may be hindering user satisfaction. This information can then be used to make data-driven decisions about how to improve the user experience. For example, if users are having trouble finding a specific feature on a website, UXers can use this information to restructure the website's navigation to make it easier to find.

Measuring the Impact of Changes

It is extremely important to measure the impact of changes. By tracking user behavior and feedback before and after a change, we can determine whether the change had a positive or negative impact on the user experience. This information can then be used to make further improvements to the product or service.

Conclusion

Measuring UX is essential for businesses that want to provide a positive user experience for their users and stay competitive in the market. It helps them understand their users' behavior and needs, identify areas for improvement, and measure the impact of changes. By measuring UX, businesses can make informed decisions about how to improve their products.

To measure UX, we can use a variety of methods, including surveys, usability testing, analytics, and more. It's essential to use a combination of methods to get a well-rounded view of the user experience.
